Throwing Large Composite Forms & Carving Patterns with Justin Paik Reese

Join Justin Paik Reese for a two-day hands-on workshop focused on mastering techniques for throwing larger composite forms safely and effectively. This workshop covers essential practices such as pattern development, carving, perforations, and mapping basic geometry, helping you build confidence when working with substantial amounts of clay. You'll also learn practical methods to overcome challenges and design cohesive, well-thought-out pieces.

  • Day 1:  Justin will demonstrate throwing a composite piece that will then be used on day two for the demonstration involving patterning layout/mapping and carving. Students begin working on pieces using techniques learned thus far. The goal is to have a completed composite piece by the end of the first day.
  • Day 2:  Justin will demonstrate patterning layout/mapping and carving on the composite pieces. Students will use techniques they learn in the demonstration to come up with their own patterns and also have the option to replicate the instructor’s patterns if they choose to do so.

This is a two-day workshop meeting on:

  • Saturday, February 22nd, 2025: 11:00 AM - 5:00 PM
  • Sunday, Febuary 23rd, 2025: 11:00 AM - 5:00 PM

Bio: Justin Reese is a studio potter out of Youngstown, Ohio. Some of his influences include 90’s pop culture, retro video games, gothic architecture/design, and Korean pottery and patterning. He fires to cone 10/11 in his soda kiln, often looking for rich carbon-trapping with bright, electric celadons. If he is not loading a kiln or making work, you can find him spoiling his daughters and nerding out on the Super Nintendo.

Artist Statement: “Growing up in a dilapidated town full of architectural genius, and often traveling to South Korea at a young age to visit my mother’s family, I have a beautiful clash of opposites that fill my mind when revisiting my past. I can vividly recall my grandfather’s ginger jar that sat next to his piles of bodybuilder magazines, often wondering why I never questioned that coexistence. There’s something profoundly powerful and lasting when elements of a reality don’t quite make sense. The shapes that I make are containers of memories, and they invite the viewer to take a deeper look.”
